Link Gap Analysis

Free competitor link gap analysis

We find the referring domains your competitors hold that you don’t, then tell you which are worth pursuing. It’s free because it’s the first step we’d take before any campaign.

What a link gap analysis actually is

A link gap analysis compares your backlink profile with the competitors ranking where you want to rank and isolates the referring domains they hold that you don't. Those shared competitor links are the closest thing SEO has to a proven opportunity list: someone has already decided those publishers were worth a link, and in many cases the same publishers will consider you too.

Most agencies treat this as a spreadsheet export. We treat it as the strategy document the whole campaign is built from, because the gap tells you not justwhere links are missing, but what kind of authority your market actually rewards.

What you receive

The free analysis is a working document, not a sales deck. It includes:

  • Your competitor set: the 3–5 domains actually competing for your target searches, not just the brands you think of as competitors.
  • The gap map: referring domains linking to two or more competitors but not to you, ranked by how often they appear across the set.
  • Realistic-opportunity flagging: which gaps are genuinely pursuable (editorial sites that accept contributions, resource pages, review properties) and which are effectively closed (partner networks, acquired links, legacy relationships).
  • Publisher notes: where we already know a publisher's standards, responsiveness or niche fit, you get that knowledge.
  • The honest read: if the gap is small, or your problem is content rather than links, we say so. The analysis is free either way.

How we build it

1. Define the real competitor set

We start from the search results, not your pitch deck. The domains outranking you for your target keywords are your link competitors, and they are often not who you would expect. A SaaS brand's link competitors might include review sites and publishers as well as rival tools.

2. Pull referring-domain profiles

For each competitor we pull the full referring-domain picture: not just counts, but which domains link to multiple competitors. A domain linking to three of your competitors is a pattern. A domain linking to one might be a relationship you'll never replicate.

3. Filter for relevance, not raw authority

This is where most gap analyses fail. A DR 80 domain in an unrelated niche, or a site that exists to sell links to everyone in your vertical, doesn't belong in your plan just because competitors have it. We filter the gap through topical relevance and our publisher vetting methodology before anything is recommended.

4. Prioritise by effort and impact

The final output ranks opportunities by a simple logic: high relevance and realistic outreach effort first. Ten placements on publishers your buyers actually read beat fifty on domains that only exist in link reports.

From gap to campaign

The analysis converts directly into an outreach plan. Each qualified gap becomes a target with a recommended placement type: a guest post where the publisher accepts contributions, a niche edit where a relevant page already ranks, or a digital PR angle where the story warrants it. You approve the publisher shortlist before outreach begins, and every placement is reported with its live URL, anchor and date.

If you'd rather run outreach in-house, the analysis still works as a standalone roadmap. Plenty of teams use it that way.

A tool export compared with an analysis

SEO tools such as Ahrefs' Link Intersect or Semrush's Backlink Gap will list domains that link to competitors but not to you in seconds. That list is the raw material, not the answer. The work is in deciding what it means:

Who this is for

  • SaaS and fintech brands competing on comparison and category SERPs where the same review properties and publications link to every rival.
  • iGaming operators and affiliates in markets where the publisher pool is thin and knowing exactly which domains matter saves months of blind outreach.
  • SEO agenciesscoping link building for a client. The gap analysis is the fastest way to price and plan a retainer honestly, including underwhite-label.
  • Brands post-redesign or post-migration that need to rebuild authority efficiently rather than spraying outreach.

Who it's not for

If you want a fixed number of links at the lowest possible price and are not concerned where they come from, this is not the service for you, and a gap analysis would be wasted on that brief. The analysis exists to find theright links, which is a different job than finding the cheapest ones.

Mistakes we see in DIY gap analyses

  • Counting domains instead of reading them. A gap of 400 domains usually contains 40 worth pursuing. The other 360 are directories, scrapers, partner badges and sites you'd never want.
  • Comparing against the wrong competitors. National brands, Wikipedia and news homepages distort the gap. Your competitors are the domains ranking for your keywords.
  • Chasing DR instead of relevance. A DR 45 publisher your buyers read will move commercial SERPs further than a DR 75 generalist that links to everyone.
  • Treating the export as the plan. The spreadsheet is step one. Qualification, prioritisation and outreach sequencing are what turn it into rankings.

The gap analysis feeds directly into editorial link building campaigns. Every opportunity is qualified through our publisher vetting methodology, and agencies can run the resulting plan under white-label fulfilment.

Questions

It depends on the size of your competitor set and the number of markets involved. We tell you when to expect it once we have your URL, target market and priority keywords.
Yes. It is the same first step we would take before any paid campaign, and it usually answers the key question: is link building actually your bottleneck?
Your domain, target market and language, and the 5–10 keywords or pages that matter commercially. Agencies should add the client’s details and whether white-label delivery is needed.
An export lists domains. The analysis interprets them: which competitors matter, which gaps are patterns rather than one-offs, which publishers are realistic targets and which would waste outreach.
Yes. Search Console or third-party link data sharpens the competitor set and avoids targeting domains you already have.
You receive a scoped proposal with a publisher shortlist, placement mix, timeline and fixed pricing. You approve publishers and drafts before anything goes live.
